It’s here! Spring has sprung and we're all finally coming out of hibernation!
Even I felt like I was in hibernation this winter. During the colder months, we tend to move less, and eat more! While winter can provide home movie and nice hunker down nights with your family, lack of movement can cause stagnation within the body and that can lead to toxic buildup.
Living a yoga lifestyle teaches you so much more on a deeper level, internal healing and how to keep the physical bodies energy system vital.
Winter time is part of natures cycle and can be a great time to restore the body, and use more warming healing foods. However if you have spent winter on the couch and eating stodgy foods and drinking alcohol, you may be feeling like it's time to get Spring Fit.
If your systems are clogged, you may feel tiredness, fatigued, achy muscles, congested in the chest and respiratory system, and you may have a thick coating on your tongue in the morning. The coating on the toungue is a great sign your body needs a detox.
Spring is a perfect time to do a holistic yoga and nutrition detox.
According to ancient Ayurvedic practice, Spring is the best time of year to detox.
As the weather warms, and you become more active it helps you to shed the excess 'kapha dosha', or protective fluid, is a crucial part of the transformation. A perfect time to clear out those heavier winter foods and toxins that accumulated over the past few months. We can all relate to that.
Most people find themselves doing this detoxing process naturally without too much planning or thinking. But if you need some help to get moving it is a good idea to reach out to a trainer online programs to guide you.
The detox allows us to feel lighter and more vibrant as we hit the outdoors again. For a successful detox, follow these steps or check out Nicky Arthur 3 Week detox Program
1. Increase water intake 2-3 liters or day
Start the day with a glass of filtered warm water with lemon.
To help clean out the liver, prepare your system for digestion, and hydrate your body. Continue drinking lots of water throughout the day.
2. Eat earlier in the day, and less at night
Include liver-supporting foods such as beets, greens, grapefruit, avocado, carrots, artichokes, etc. You can also add spices such as turmeric, cumin, cayenne and coriander as they assist with digestion and detoxing. In the 3 week detox program you will find plenty of recipes to help guide you.
3. As a guiding principal eat whole foods. Avoid gluten, dairy, sugar and other processed foods.
Processed foods are hard to digest and will take the attention of your immune system and other systems needed for detoxing. Eliminate coffee and alcohol, is a must for detoxification.
4. Eat a light and early dinner.
This is the time of the day people get their nutrition regime out of balance. Dinner should be early, no later than 7pm and the smallest meal of the day.
It can be a beautiful fresh raw salad with thin strips of fish, grass fed chicken or lean beef. Or steamed veggies or a small soup or greens juice.
5. Increase heart rate and body temperature
We loved wearing the warm Lululemon winter fashion but blessings to the end of winter. Finally the padded and fur jacket season is behind us. Get your shorts and Tops on and get outside more walking, light jogging and yogafit outdoors.
This time of the year it's a good idea to take Epsom salt baths, sauna or a Bikram Yoga Class once or twice a week. Sweating is a great way to rid the body of toxins.
6. Meditate and Breathe deeply.
Practice deep breathing exercisesto detox the mind and lungs.
Try Nicky's 6-3-6 breathing exercise Breathe in for six seconds, holding for three seconds and exhaling for six . Repeat five times in the morning and five times at night.
7. Get to bed and sleep early.
During a detox, it’s very important to get sound rest and massage. That means putting your phone on flight mode, shutting down for proper sound sleep.
This is when our body rests and repairs itself over night. It's crucial to provide it with sufficient down time. The sooner you learn this the better.
8. Create your own detox
There is so many different styles and length of times for a detox.
You can choose your length for a detox, from a 3 day 7 day to 3 weeks.
so determine what will work for you. I recommend if you are new to begin with a 3 day cleanse.
A detox is purely the way I live my everyday life and nutrition which is focusing on eating unprocessed foods, eating wholesome foods with a good balance of fruits, veges, gluten free grains, nuts and seeds with some well sourced protein.
Happy Spring detox
